Ubud & Around

Ubud Tour

Monkey forest, a jungle swing, the Tegallalang terraces, a waterfall, a spring temple and coffee.

The day itself.

The full Ubud loop, run in the order that keeps you ahead of the coaches. Everything on this day sits within about an hour of Ubud, so the driving is short and the stops are long.

It opens in the Sacred Monkey Forest, where three hundred long-tailed macaques live in a temple wood in the middle of town, and moves on to a jungle swing over the river valley before the queue builds. Tegallalang comes next: a working rice terrace, still cut by hand into the hillside.

The second half slows down. A waterfall to stand under, a spring temple where Balinese families come to bathe, and a coffee smallholding on the way home where they roast in a wok over wood and let you taste the whole rack before you decide whether to buy any.

Start time is yours. Early means Tegallalang with farmers in it rather than a queue for the swing.

How the day runs.

  1. 01

    Hotel pickup

You pick the hour. Earlier is quieter at every stop after it.

  2. 02

    Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud

Bags zipped and sunglasses off. The macaques here are practised thieves.

  3. 03

Jungle swing over the river valley

Harness and staff photographer included in the swing ticket. Easy to skip if heights are not your thing.

  4. 04

    Tegallalang rice terrace

The walk down into the terrace is steep and worth it. Small donations at two gates on the path.

What it costs.

Tegenungan by default, wide and easy to reach. Say the word and we go to a quieter one instead.

    Water temple at Tirta Empul

Join the purification in the spring, or watch from the side. Nobody minds either way.

  • 07

    Coffee plantation and tasting

The tasting rack is free. Luwak coffee is the one cup you pay for, and nobody will push it.

  • 08
