The day itself.
Karangasem is the old kingdom in the far east, about two hours out, and the day starts early because of one gate.
Lempuyang's split gate frames Mount Agung on a clear morning. By nine the queue for that photograph is over an hour deep; at first light there is no queue at all. The honest part is that the mirror in every version of that picture is a small piece of glass the temple photographer holds under a phone. Everyone knows, everyone still wants it, and it costs nothing extra.
After that the pace changes completely. Tirta Gangga is stepping stones across a koi pond and terraced fountains you can sit beside for an hour. Lahangan Sweet is a bamboo platform on a ridge with nothing in front of it but the volcano. Taman Ujung closes the day: a water palace built in 1909, half ruined by the 1963 eruption and an earthquake after it, and better for the ruin.

The last stretch of road up is narrow and steep. Clouds tend to close over Agung by early afternoon.
